Appointment with Death
by Agatha Christie
First published in 1938, this mystery is set in Jerusalem and in the ruins in Petra, Jordan. When Mrs. Boynton, the overbearing and tyrannical matriarch of a wealthy American family, is found dead, Hercule Poirot has only 24 hours to solve the mystery before Mrs. Boynton's body is shipped back to the U.S. And, as usual, Poirot is up to the challenge. While the ending came as a surprise, I have to admit that if the murderer hadn't killed Mrs. Boynton while on holiday in Petra, it would only have been a matter of time before her evil sadistic behavior would have driven someone else to commit the deed. And, I, for one, would have felt that their behavior was justified.
