This book felt like it was for me in the most serendipitous and devastating ways. You get to see the sheer joy and community that came with prewar Berlin as the characters gather in the Eldorado, yet you also experience how quickly things can change. There are strong explorations of themes around if safety can be selfish, the conflict between awareness and making oneself a target, and of course, intense trauma and grief and perseverance. I am broken and held by this novel and am grateful for it.
