“It’s amazes me how men can find women to do things like that for them.”
Big thanks to Penguin Random House Audio and Pamela Dorman Books for the ALC in exchange for an honest review!
I have been looking for a good thriller for so long and I finally found what I was looking for! Admittedly I didn’t like the first book I read by Shari Lapena, but after seeing so many great reviews for this, I grabbed the audio and I’m so glad I did.
This is an incredible domestic thriller that’s so layered and intricate. It hinges on Bryden’s disappearance, which leaves her husband Sam desperate for answers though he’s suspected by the police. As the story opens up and we meet more people connected to the disappearance, it’s clear that everyone is not only suspicious but hiding their own secrets.
The pace is quick, moving from different perspectives to sprinkle in subtle clues. Besides Jane, the detective, a lot of the characters come across as unlikeable or just so suspicious that it’s hard to determine who was involved with the disappearance. There are so many layers to the relationships of these characters and so much deception that it makes for such a great and compelling read. And I will say that the ending was excellent and so unexpected!
I would definitely recommend the audiobook, as January Lavoy narrates. She does an amazing job narrating for so many different characters, giving them unique voices to really pull you into the story. She captures the ranges of emotion in each character so effortlessly. It makes for such a great audiobook experience.
