I’ve never read a book of which the film adaptation is so true to the story! When reading the book, there were so many passages and lines from the film (which I have known and loved all my life) that were lifted from the book, and I was able to read large swathes of it with their voices reading in my head.
It is such a (to use their phraseology) darling little book, with such a gentle but also perfectly believable story of childhood in times gone by, and the innocence and freedom of that childhood - it makes you quite nostalgic!
Roberta has always been and will always be my absolute favourite, but I’ve never realised how much I remind myself of her. There are many points in the book where we get to understand Bobbie a bit better than the others - seeing into her mind almost - where I have felt that it is almost like seeing into myself.
Overall a fantastic read, very gentle and sweet, and generally feel good!
