The Door-to-Door Bookstore by Carsten Henn
3.5

This was a really lovely premise that evolved into something so much more.  I love the idea of someone who knows their clients so well that they know the exact book to recommend for them, and then having those people respond accordingly after reading each book.

Schascha was such an enigma of a person and it's exactly what Carl needed to revive his outlook on life.  The latter part of the book was quite heart-wrenching, and maybe the pessimist in me
was really angry/disappointed that nobody came to visit him.  But, then it's explained how the bookshop was refusing to comment on him in any way as he was no longer an employee, and there was nobody else in his life to update anyone of his whereabouts.  I do wonder if any of his regular customers knew where he lived, because it does seem surprising that the teacher or the muscle man didn't come to check on him, since they were okay leaving their houses.

I'm never really sure when to use the word poignant, but I feel like this book just encapsulates that word for me.
