The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins, H. a. Guerber

4.0

This is the mother of all detective stories (arguably), and it hits all the high points: a quirky detective, a narrative told in letters, a strong-willed heroine, a clever servant (or two), a person to be pitied for an infirmity (illness and disability, ding ding), a racist portrayal of immigrants/people from non-Western countries, a magical POC, opium, a poorer but better gentleman, a prettier but amoral gentleman, and several hysterical spinster.

If you like that sort of thing, you will love this. It's a big chunky mystery.
