The Ravaged by Norman Reedus

4.0

The book focuses on the lives of three individual people, different walks of life, and with different struggles. It alternates between the three character’s current situations and the events that are taking place in their lives. I think the take away for me was that everyone struggles with this life on Earth. We are not all dealt with a one of pure happiness or one that is obstacle free. Life is hard. We can’t choose our families, but we can choose our destiny.

Each person is on their own journey of self discovery: The biker veteran discovering secrets his late father kept, the young girl that is running from a broken and abusive home life, and the business man that has hurt the people he loves most in life. Each one rediscovering themselves along the way, and overcoming conflicts they run into.

I really enjoyed listening to the audio version of this book. It was read by Norman Reedus himself. I was surprised to read so many 2 and 3 star reviews after reading it. In my opinion, I don’t think those readers fully understood the point of theses stories. This was real life. It felt like reading about real people. Not every story has to have a rounded ending to be great, and I appreciated that each person’s story was open ended. It made me think about their future and what it might look like.

So, as Norman Reedus’ debut novel I thought it was great! He has a gift for writing and I hope he continues writing nonfiction. If we are lucky, maybe we will get a sequel?
