Every Summer After by Carley Fortune

5.0

ok listen I loved this. is it perfect? no. but I adored it. i could go 4 or 5 stars. i could dock 1 for the pacing but add one for how it made me feel. it made me feel the way I felt when I read The Summer I Turned Pretty for the first time. the way that percy and sam’s relationship develops was so organic and beautiful. the level of absolute LONGING made my heart literally hurt. I do think the pacing could have been better. we got so much detail of the past summers but the present day story seemed to wrap up really quickly. while I feel like this is unrealistic irl, it’s also typical for the genre, because I always find myself wanting more from the characters. I wish we learned more about what their lives were like after the events of the story. i’ve legit been thinking about these characters all day. i initially was annoyed that the “big event” that happened was so secretive but once the reveal happened i was like oh….okay yeah that was worth waiting for the bombshell. it would have been nice if the characters were more up front with each other, because seeing them circle each other for ages was painful. but i think that was part of the character development because the depth they showed was so much fun. this was a library loan but i’ll 1000% be buying this so I can reread it and destroy myself emotionally over and over. I love sam. and percy was so messed up but so real.
