zandrama 's review for:

Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman
4.0

I read this story as an adult and it its really cute and Gaiman is a great storyteller, but it is a childrens book. If I'd read it to my children it would probably have gotten a five star review, but as an adult it gets four starts.

The one thing that really bothers me is the way the women are depicted. I know that it was believed that women during this era was regarded less than men, that they wasn't as important and didn't have much to do with "male" things like running the village, be in charge etc. But the thing is that this is false and that people during the Viking era (and as late as the 18th century) was far more equal (regarding sex, not class obviously) than we are today. Unfortunately this was erased from history by some very influential men during the industrial revolution in the 19th century.

I will probably get a Swedish copy and read this to my 9 and 10 year olds, since they're very interested in Vikings and Asgardians.
