Four Dead Queens by Astrid Scholte

4.0

I didn't quite know what I was getting myself into with this book, but thank goodness I did.

The title is pretty self explanatory, you're dealing with 4 dead queens that ruled the quadrants of Quadara. You learn of their secrets in the palace, their deaths, and ultimately why they payed with their lives. This book gives me strong Divergent vibes, and it's totally awesome. The Four Quadrants are known for upholding very different ideals and their people resemble their quadrant. The bulk of the story follows a street thief Torian named Keralie and a supposed to be stoic faced Eonist named Varin. They learn of the deaths of the queen and set out to learn who committed the atrocities to try and help the castle and in return, themselves.

I think both characters are very well written and though some people may find problems with one or both main characters, I think they are exactly who they need to be to make this book work so perfectly.

This book moves fast without you realizing it. A lot of events happen in quick succession, but until the characters drop how many days it's actually been you don't realize how quickly.

I WILL NOT SPOIL THE END, BUT HOLY SHEEPDIP BATMAN. Every guess you have throughout the book I promise you is wrong. I was so pleasantly surprised with how things ended up happening. You won't expect a thing, and I think that's the main reason you should pick up this book.
