We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

5.0

I firstly read this on my kobo and then went and bought it as well if that says anything about how much I love this book. It was a fast read in a time that I felt super anxious which made a world of a difference for me. I’m having trouble admitting this to myself, but I may prefer childhood friends to lovers over enemies to lovers, so this book made me cry before it even got sad, solely because the character connections were so well done. Not to mention the hysterical sob at the end of the book. Lockhart said this book was her stepping out of her comfort zone, and you can see the effort she put into this through her writing style. The narrating voice is quite simple and crude, something that managed to convey emotion and theme so well that I was blown away. Not only this, but she was able to use a very small location/set throughout the entire book while maintaining a fast pace with incredible attention to detail. The book blurb doesn’t do this masterpiece any justice. This is not a simple family feud- it is a devastating confrontation of morals and understanding of perspective along with layers of grief.
