The Unexpected Guest
by Charles Osborne, Agatha Christie
dark
mysterious
fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven:
Character
On the surface this was a well written mystery- with each character having the motive, means, and opportunity. However, when you look beneath the surface of the words, there is some really cruel sentiments involving chronically ill/disabled persons. And there is a certain (harmful) stereotype being played with in regards to these characters, which is upsetting to read and see how these characters are treated due to their disabilities. Those two characters felt very disappointing with their development- unnecessary and cruel. A disability should not be equated with a death sentence or with a cruel personality.
Graphic: Ableism
Moderate: Alcoholism, Animal cruelty, Child death, Alcohol
Minor: Gun violence, Forced institutionalization
