Broken Harbor by Catherine Cowles
2.0

Catherine Cowles’ books are hit and miss for me. There are some that I truly enjoyed, and there are some that I hope I just finish with a snap of my fingers.

This started out so well. I rarely enjoy single mom/dad books the past few years but I gave this a shot because of how much I enjoyed reading about Luca in Thea & Shep’s story.

This book felt unrealistic with how the love story went down. It’s instalove (which isn’t extremely a big deal for me since most romance books are) but with how much build up there was about how Sutton lives her life as a single mom, her dedication to providing for her and Luca by herself, it was hard to believe she will gladly hand over the reigns to someone else. There wasn’t much hesitation from her end which I don’t think is on brand from her character.

Another is that Cope fell flat. In comparison to Shep, Cope wasn’t your usual small-town romantic guy. Even when people move to the big city, they usually don’t lose their small-town charm.

The conflict/mystery in the book was good. Not that I condone fearing for your life due to exes and addiction but it was high stakes which made me enjoy the story, especially since the romance was bleh.

I felt so sad about Teddy. I think it was one point in the book that affected me so much.

Lastly, for a small-town romance book that is heavily centered on family (or found family), I was surprised their mom, Nora was not involved at all. Yes, she’s said to have done this or appeared on this and that but she was never truly active like Lolli was. It was weird and disorienting especially since it felt the family dynamics lacking. I love the sibling bond, I love Lolli, I wish there was more on-page participation from Nora to tie things up together.

Cope’s family/childhood trauma didn’t even get addressed. He revealed it to Sutton and then that was it, with a bit of comfort, it faded in the background of the book. I think it was important for Nora to be involved in that to help Cope move forward.

Like I said, I didn’t care much for the love story. The book felt repetitive, it offered nothing new to the blossoming relationship of Sutton & Cope. I think the book could have been shorter.

I’m hoping Arden’s story will be better. I miss the feeling I got from reading Shep & Thea.
