Apprentice to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer
3.0
adventurous funny fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Weaker than the first book in terms of both plot and characterization, but has more quotable lines. Some of the plot was poorly described and even confusing. The characters sometimes acted in ways that were foolish and out of character for plot convenience.

I'm not a fan of how many different POVs were included, and I'm not sure I like Becky enough to want to see her play a bigger role.

The romantic element was more frustrating than enjoyable. I like yearning, but the will-they-won't-they gets old fast.
While Evie is bravely facing her feelings, trying to communicate, and is prepared to face the risks associated with being with him, Trystan is pushing her out due to fear and a warped sense of self-preservation. It doesn't feel like a cute unrequited-but-not-actually love story anymore, it feels like a man unwilling to be brave for the women he supposedly loves.

All in all, I'm very skeptical of the trajectory of this series.
