Twin sisters Abby and Lily fought over a missing sweater that day in the hall at the high school. An angry Abby deliberately drove off, leaving her alleged sweater-stealing sister alone to walk home or call the parents. But the English teacher was still there. He was almost one of the kids. He could rhapsodize about the music they listened to; he was still reasonably young with a hot wife; he was a looker himself. Rick offered Lily a ride that night, and she climbed into his car without so much as a thought. When he drove past her subdivision, Lily began to understand she made a terrible mistake. It would be eight long years of rape, abuse, and imprisonment before Lilly could rectify that error. While he kept her hostage in his cabin, she gave birth to his child, a little girl Lily named Sky because she had no exposure to anything outdoors. The child symbolized her sky.
But he was careless one day, and he left the lock undone. Lily and Sky escaped, and they found their way to Lily's childhood home, where she learned so, so much had changed.
The book unfolds the drama of Lily's adjustment to life at home and her constant fear that charming diabolical Rick would somehow find a way to hurt her or Sky again. This is a thoroughly captivating story of how a family picks up the pieces after a horrible experience and the price each member pays in attempting to reclaim that family existence.
There's one scene here that felt flawed and unrealistic to me. I can't describe it here, since it gives away too much. But this could have been a five-star book had it been written just a little differently. That said, it was nearly impossible to put down, and during one of my numerous bouts with sleeplessness, Holly Overton's talent and Jenna Lamia's lovely youthful narration kept me company and very much awake.
