If I was rating volume 1 by itself, it would probably be five stars. But volume 2 (“good wives”) results in Jo’s character arc taking a sharp turn towards conformity, and a lot of lectures on morality and the limited place of a woman within the home. Volume 1 was full of passion, growing characters and trials and turbulence, with interesting plot lines and relationships. I could say very little of what happened in volume 2.
