The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

5.0

What a gorgeous story! What makes this story really stand out for me is the author's precision with language. V.E. Schwab is a master of poetry, but the descriptions never get lost in fluffery. She says exactly what she means and paints a clear visual for the reader. And what a visual it is! From the dark, eerie forest to the sweep of breath across Addie's neck to the feel of Henry's fingers on her cheek, the reader (or in my case, the listener) is right there in the scene.

Underlying the lyrical language is a brilliantly woven story that passes in out of the present to moments of Addie's life in a 300-year time span. Seems like it would be an impossible feat to create such an intricate timeline and ask the reader to hold onto the details, but the story just sings and makes it so easy to fit the pieces together.

This book was "Little Red Riding Hood" meets The Time Traveler's Wife and I was all in to the last breathtaking scene between Addie and the Darkness. I was expecting a Romeo and Juliet ending- and I won't say what happened, but I will say I had a fantastic time imagining the different possibilities before hearing what the author had planned. I almost wish the last Henry chapter hadn't been added in, but I appreciate the additional layering of the story. Truly masterful storytelling.

The audiobook was an absolute joy to listen to. The narrator was phenomenal.
