Upstream: Selected Essays by Mary Oliver

3.5

Beautiful, beautiful writing. It's an essay collection that's definitely supposed to be read outside in a park somewhere. There's a lot I can praise about the writing in this collection, but I also felt like it was missing something. I think I just don't connect with Mary Oliver's philosophy completely, so while one moment the writing drew me in, I just as quickly lost interest.

Overall, I enjoyed section one and four the most, closely followed by three, though I'd like to revisit section three once I've actually read some more of the transcendentalists.

This might not turn out to be a new favorite, but it has left me quite curious to pick up Mary Oliver's poetry (and Walt Whitman's 'Leaves of Grass')
