THE WORDPLAY. THE REFERENCES. JFC, I was solidly within the target audience for this book and I knew that before I even picked it up. Sure, I didn't grow up in the '80s, but as a Viet American bookworm and lover of punk and alt music, I didn't expect to learn too much from this book—just thought it would be fun. It was fun. I was laughing aloud and nearly crying in others. And although I expected the book to mostly cover stories I'm already well familiar with—Vietnamese Americans, high school punks—I feel like it leaves me a little more open to the classic "white-person" literature I haven't always given a chance. Be right back, maybe I'll have to check out some more Kafka...
