sasstronaut 's review for:
The Magicians
by Lev Grossman
Basically, think Harry Potter plus Narnia with some oddly placed adult themes.
This book was completely unfufilling for me. Although I did find the characters at least mildly interesting, I found the story itself to be underwhelming and 2 dimensional. Not a very dynamic read.
There were numerous times when I felt the story was building up to something only to have it completely switch gears. This left an unfinished feeling as well as an idea of being drawn along before I was ready. Also tended to make me wonder why put so much effort into what came before when it ended up not amounting to much at all.
I often felt I was coming upon (or was already in) the central point of the story, only to find that wasn't really the case.
Additionally, I found the adult portions to be misplaced and not very well written into the story. Honestly seemed to just pop up because he wanted to sprinkle in some adult theme. Didn't work well.
