Elric of Melniboné by Michael Moorcock

3.0

I've been wanting to read Elric for years, so I'm disappointed to report that this was simply 'fine' for me. Written with some of the tropes and conventions I love from Classic Fantasy (and certainly a good book for discussion, as evidenced by the lively group chat I was happy to be a part of), the writing style made me feel divorced from Elric and his internal struggle. This is most certainly a question of personal preference, as this style is something that frequently makes me feel separate from the emotional underpinnings of the novel and has interrupted my enjoyment of other well-loved works of fantasy. Still, I am planning to continue and expect that as the story builds I will find more to enjoy. It's always a pleasure to read a foundational work in your favourite genre and I appreciate Elric for its contributions to fantasy at large.
