The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg
3.0

I love magic! I love when an author creates a unique world and mode of magic. This book did both. The premise of bonding to man made materials was so intriguing. The 'folding' magic was really fun! I wanted more of that! My mind's eye could clearly see it! When I met Ceony, I immediately liked her. She's feminine, strong, intelligent, and witty. I knew immediately upon her meeting Mg. Thane that I wanted a romance. I 'shipped them from the start. I was happy with how the romance unfolds SUPER slow, it makes me want to continue reading to see what becomes of them.

Holmberg's world building is good, but I had one itty bitty issue. Ummmm, is this Victorian London? Yea, I had a really hard time believing that. Not much in the story to solidify that. It did NOT read like a period piece. It was very 'contemporary'. Even down to speech patterns.

I loved the imagination behind the 'chambers'! That was probably one of my favorite pieces of this story. I was fascinated with the characters learning about others and themselves via this platform. And as the reader, I loved learning more about characters this way.

I love a good villian. Sadly, this was not a good villian for me. And what's really sad, they could have been. They were just flat and angry. I get why, but I wanted more. Maybe we'll get more in later books? I liked this book enough to read on and find out.

Overall, a fun book. Light and easy to read. Great premise, so so execution. Some parts I zoned in and out of, due to lack of interest. Not disappointing enough to sway me from reading the rest of the series or more of this author's work. I love her imagination, and I'm sure she has much more to offer.
