Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor

Sigh. The first half of this book was SO GOOD. I loved the character of Karou: her sharp wit, strong friendship w/ both Zuzana & the chimera & mysterious origins had me staying up late at night. And then… romance. Which, ok, romance. But it’s all beauty & feeling mysteriously attracted (because, well, beauty) & Karou doesn’t just flatten out, she disappears for a while. And sure, I get it (the disappearance, that is), but it was *still* romance. We never see Madrigal as a fierce warrior; we never see relationships grow or change. And then it just ends. “To be continued” Which drives me crazy. Sure, have a sequel, but also… have an ending. Nope. And here I am, wondering if the next book will be like the first half of this one (in which case I would love to read it) or the second half (in which case, meh). I’m betting it’s the second & that makes me sad because the first part of this book was fantastic.
