Loan from a friend, finished in 3 days. This one was heavy - lots of trauma, child abuse, gore, murder, rape, police brutality, abuse of special needs students, and more. The story kept me going even though it wasn't like a mystery you're trying to solve. The story is of two girls who survived a brutal assault and a new murder that brings them together as adults in their hometown. They have to face the women they've become and reveal the lives they've built since. It is not a happy reunion. There are a lot of small-town dynamics to be worked through, plenty of post-traumatic processing and broken family drama. Rich and poor, life and death, mental and physical scars, the book is full of dichotomies and dualities.
It is brutal and harsh, not something I would normally read, and I cried multiple times. I wouldn't say the characters are lovable, exactly, but I did want to know more and want them to resolve things. I don't know if I'll read another by this author (I prefer less in the way of child abuse), but this was a moving read and very worthwhile.
