The Bennet Women by Eden Appiah-Kubi
2.0
I’m super unimpressed. There were some good quotes about feminism/marginalism and I’m all for intersectionality but that’s legit where the magic died.
EJ is pretentious, annoying, insufferable, holier-than-thou, rude, and an absolute killjoy. Can’t stand her. The book would’ve been better without her. I haven’t read an FMC so unlikeable in…actually maybe ever. It was awful.
Will is an idiot, and has to learn how to not be a shitty person because he’s been dumped. Bro what? And it’s not even general rudeness, it’s genuine like ‘wtf is wrong with you’ kind of rudeness. You got dumped. It SUCKED. Either don’t be around people or move on.
Lee is a bad friend. Legit. Just a bad friend. He tells his friend who is going thru apparently one of the worst times in his life that he needs to make more friends bc he wants to have his own life but then goes and spills MAJOR secrets to a girl he’s been dating like a month AND does so in WRITTEN FORM instead of saying it where it couldn’t leak. wtf? I’d never speak to him again if that were my friend. He can’t be trusted. After that he basically disappears.
Jamie is not nearly as annoying as the rest of the cast but is still pretty damn annoying. She’s using old, RESOLVED problems with her MOM as a reason to balk with a guy? As a queer woman myself I’m not buying it. Just say you’re a bitch baby and get on w it.
Tessa needs to leave Colin alone.
Lily is great but also it’s shitty that will told her story in writing instead of explaining and apologizing.
Dia is a dumbass.
Why is Zara even in this book? The truth bombs could’ve come from Lee, his bestie, Lily, his actual sister, or Katerina, who arranges his whole fucking life.
Carrie Dean showing up was useless and it seems like author just wanted more pages.
Cast sucks, they’re pretentious and annoying, the pride and prejudice did not pride and prejudice. I came into this book SO excited bc I’ll read just about any p&p retelling and this is the worst I’ve read. By far. Would never recommend this.
