There are some wonderful, glowing moments in this book, and most of them have nothing to do with Harriet Tubman. I loved the speculative element (and wanted more of it, but that’s a personal preference). But my god, everyone talks like Wikipedia articles and stage soliloquies. With a little less infodump and a little more focus on the main character, this would be stellar. As is? Pretty good.
Graphic: Homophobia, Racism, Outing
Moderate: Cursing, Drug use, Violence
Minor: Cancer
A gun is brandished but never fired; n-word and f-slur are present but basically never in a derogatory context
