Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

I really enjoyed this book. It was fun, creative, and cute. Refreshingly so for its genre.

First, I should go into this review acknowledging that I expected nothing from this book. I didn't know if I'd even like it. The premise appealed to me. I know a girl named Evie, and perhaps it made me feel nostalgic, seeing her name in print after all of these years post-graduation. If you're out there, Evie, thanks for sharing the food you baked during home economics. A true friend.

CONTEXT ASIDE— I decided to take a risk for this one. With an unknown author, whom none of my friends has heard of — it was exhilarating. Like mapping uncharted territory, I eagerly held my Australian flag between my fingers and whispered 'today is one small step for man—'

Okay. I'm just a little bit gooey right now. Excited, even. Because my risk paid off. Exponentially. Because folks, here we have a fine-tuned book that fits it's role well as a fun, creative and cute paranormal not-quite-scifi (with a dash of romance) novel!

Now I'm not going to tell you the Paranormalcy is the most well-written book I've come across. Nor am I going to claim its characters are awe-inspiring or jaw dropping. If you're looking for a book that falls into one of those categories, move along. But this book never claimed to be those things. No, it found its own little niche spot in this genre and carved itself a lovely hole to stay: as a light, fun read with an intriguing plot and simply likeable characters.

If you're looking for something to read during summer vacation when the rain won't go away and you're stuck staring at the beach through the fifth storey window of your holiday villa — this book is 100% for you. Love it. Treasure it for what it is. Switch off and relaxxxx, man.
