The Talisman by Peter Straub, Stephen King
4.0

I've read my share of Stephen King. Mostly, I've enjoyed his work. I've only read one novel by Peter Straub, so I wasn't able to pick up on his influence in the novel as much as that of King. The Talisman is essentially a quest novel with Jack encountering obstacles left and right on his journey to make it across the country and retrieve the titular item in order to save his mother's life. Now, unlike many other literature snobs, I fully admit that Stephen King can write. Yes, he's capable of spitting out crap - but he knows when he's doing it. What he does best is create characters. The Talisman displays this talent in abundance, in fact, if I had to guess which characters were handled by King and which by Straub I think I could be fairly successful. The authors have created a very dark world - but not one without hope. More than anything else, the novel impressed me with its conviction that love and compassion do exist even in the most desperate of situations.
Of course, like many other readers, I was completely taken by the character of Wolf....a being so filled with innocence and love that you would have to have a heart of stone not to care for him. The portions of the book that featured him were highlights of the novel.
Often I am skeptical of novels that are co-written - but the creators of The Talsiman have fused their styles eloquently and created a book that is both fun and rewarding...and like the world we share with Jack...sometimes hiding something much deeper just below its surface.
