Hmm this was really difficult for me to rate! I was instantly hooked by the prologue and first quarter of the book. Then, ironically, things kept happening so fast that I actually slowed down in reading it. I just barely managed to finish it before it was due back at the library. The fast-paced nature is a sort of double-edged sword for me. It's exciting but at the same time I wish we had slowed down and gotten some development particularly with the romance. Don't get me wrong! I like all three of the main characters and their romance but I would have liked a few more steps between. It happened very fast.

Still there's a lot to love here! Zetian is a complete badass (maybe a little unhinged but I don't mind!). The worldbuilding was really cool. The dialogue and inner monologues may have been a little over the top but fun nonetheless. I will definitely pick up the sequel and other books by this author
