This is a difficult book for me to rate because I enjoyed it. I loved the setting, the atmosphere, the plot, and the main characters. It’s the writing that made it a struggle to get through.
I found myself constantly combining and rewriting sentences in my head, which took me out of the reading experience. I understand that this was self-published, then picked up by Bramble. However, the editor in me expected better from a traditionally published book. Another frustration was the immature character voices, regardless of their age. That, along with how little the characters were fleshed out made it difficult to connect with them.
It’s one of those addictive books one reads as a guilty pleasure. For that, it deserves a 3.5 from me.
I liked RuNyx’s style enough to read her other works, but hopefully with better editing in the future.
