Breakaway by Avon Gale

I had a hard time getting through this one. The characters were tough to relate to, and the narrative had this strange choppy feel to it. Lane in general is kind of choppy, which may be why it was hard to follow along with his perspective. He felt very over-the-top literal and innocent to me, it got to the point where it was downright aggravating. I felt like I was getting whiplash sometimes…which maybe was the point, but made it hard to enjoy.

Everything in this book seems to happen very fast, and there doesn't seem to be much build-up to any of it…which is maybe magnified by the sheer amount of telling-instead-of-showing way of writing the author uses. The narration bounced around a lot, and there are so many things that seemed like they might add some drama, before turning into nothing at all.

Even the hockey parts, while more entertaining (I enjoyed the playoff sequence, especially when the two main teams were facing off), couldn't save the book for me.

I don't know, I can see the appeal some people might see in this, but for me, it just didn't work.
