It must be a long time since I read this as I couldn't remember exactly what happens. Poor Mary Yellan's having a terrible year. Her mother dies, her home is sold, and she has to go and live at Jamaica Inn with feeble aunt Patience and horrible uncle Joss. What's he up to, anyway? Nothing good, for sure. Convincingly windswept, rainy and unpleasant descriptions of Bodmin Moor in the early nineteenth century, plus plenty of traumatic adventures.
