Sequel to Shanghai Girls, although to be honest I didn't remember a lot of the details from that one and I was fine.
Joy is a Chinese-American who has just finished her first year of college in 1958. Angry after her father's suicide, she runs away to become a member of Red China. Her mother follows her to try and convince her to come back. I found the descriptions of what went on in the communes horrifying and disturbing, yet the entire book was compelling.
