After Dark by Haruki Murakami

3.0

Reading this book is quite an experience.

Once again, Murakami has successfully pulled me into this world. And just like how he does in his other books, it felt surreal; as if I'm having this vivid dream about people I just knew. Neon lights. Good ol' music. Restless night. It felt like my senses were all invited to actively take part as I flip through the pages.

If people are complaining about the loose ends in the book, I do hope that they would take time to reconsider. Remember that all of the events in this book took place in one night, or must I say, in a span of few hours; and despite the crazy things that can happen overnight, there are just things that won't get resolved by the time the morning comes. Murakami's works, magical as they may seem, still have that touch of realism in it. So although I am also in the same boat with you wanting to know more about the characters and how their fates turned out to be, it just wouldn't be realistic. It just wouldn't be Murakami.

Definitely not the best book starter for a Murakami binge. But I think people who already appreciate his niche would better understand his choices. Needless to say, this is still quite a captivating read. Escapism might be the best word for it.

Just remember to enjoy the experience and let the book take you on a quick glimpse of the world he presents. It might not lead you to a destination but it will surely take you on a enchanting ride.
