Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

2.0

It felt like ages before I finished this book. While the writing is slightly beautiful, I could not believe that this was just a 400-paged book. I could’ve sworn it had been a thousand by the pace that we were going. Ever since I saw this on the shelves when I was younger, I have wanted to read it but never got the chance to do so until now. I just have to say that putting it off was a wise decision. 15-yo me wouldn’t have stayed until the end of the book because at some parts it felt like I was trudging through mud, unable to resurface myself so I can read this book and finally finish it.

I am disappointed with the main storyline. I was really engaged at the first part. The writing was really immersive but I think it only skimmed the surface of what it really meant to be a geisha. Maybe if a real geisha had written this, I would've gained a better appreciation for it. I had been rooting for Sayuri since the beginning but I lost way towards the end. I don’t think that she was a good person. She was vile and conniving.

Facts about the rating: I was bored and it felt like ages before I finished. But then again I liked it enough that I did not dnf.
