A. Lincoln: A Biography
by Ronald C. White
I always feel a sense of accomplishment after completing a tome as ponderous as this. This time, I also feel a sense of loss. Abraham Lincoln was killed and I understand now, more than I ever did before, what a horrible waste that was. Abraham Lincoln was a great man and a good man.
"Of all the men I have met, he seemed to possess more of the elements of greatness, combined with goodness, than any other." -General William Tecumseh Sherman
This is most certainly a political biography. There are personal details, but only as they relate to his political career. Anyone looking for a more personal biography of Abraham Lincoln should look elsewhere.
My one complaint with this book is the analyses of Lincoln's speeches. I found those annoying. I would have preferred to enjoy Lincoln's words without the repeated interruptions. And, the freedom to draw one's own conclusions is a freedom that we, as readers, most highly prize.
