Gentleman Jack: The Real Anne Lister by Anne Choma
5.0
An amazing read. The book is genuine insight in the life and mind of the truly remarkable and interesting individual of head strong and charismatic Anne Lister. Anne Lister a truly complex women who mange to accomplish some truly remarkable things such as individuality and economic independent and living a almost open lesbian life in early 19 century England. Anne as revolutionary progressive as she was in many regards the book also but briefly reflect on Anne Listers more cold and conservative opinions and world worldview. All adding up to the complex of Anne Listers character. Even though this book primarily focuses on Listers last 6 years of her life and the relationship with Ann Walker. The book provides an great representation and historical perspectives on feminism, queer identity and mental health as well as other social commentary. Even though much of the book only focuses on a short amount of time and not nearly a complete portray of Annes adult life and relationships. For me its provided me with a great story and sparked a genuine interest in the life of Anne Lister life and character and an eagerness to lear more.
I can’t recommend this book enough. The book contains a great romantic story as wived and rich as fiction. Gentleman Jack is sometimes a comical read packed with historical insight on medicine, mental health, travel, identity religion, female independents and much more.
