Break the Bodies, Haunt the Bones by Micah Dean Hicks
5.0

I wanted to read this book the minute I heard of it and I was not disappointed. A rich and disturbing allegorical tale of the death of towns dependent on corporate industry for their livelihood and identity. We can see in Swine Hill the past lives of Flint, Michigan or of Mid Atlantic towns where steel, clothes, or furniture manufacturing plants have been shuttered and erased. The ghosts of memories – or memories of ghosts - of better times where life had purpose and work had meaning and community reflected what was shared. Also an odd and interesting look at ideas about personhood and what it means to be “human,” a sort of “animal farm“ turned 90°. And, even though I don’t usually like the genre, a stunning richly detailed horror story that will leave you as haunted as the town’s inhabitants.
