  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

2.0

I had to read this for school.
The story is basically a retelling of the life of Kathy, who went to a boarding school called Hailsham.

The concept of the people who went to Hailsham is interesting. I really expected more from the concept "cloned people who exist to donate organs" but I was let down.

Kathy talks about her experiences in life and about her friends like Ruth and Tommy. And that's it. There doesn't seem to be any objective and I need that in books. Some of the things that happened have absolutely no connection to anything in the plot.

Kathy, Ruth and Tommy are boring characters for me, I couldn't get invested in them and wtf Kathy just stole Tommy from Ruth? Or Tommy cheated on her? I don't know about that. There didn't seem to be ANY conflict with it.

So much things are left in the dark. There's no explanation of what exactly the Hailsham people are and what exactly their fate is. Slowly, the reader gets a few bits and pieces of information but it's never fully explained and I hate that. I feel like this is a sequel to something explaining the whole concept because this really feels like something is missing.

I'm only giving this two stars because the writing was easy to follow and I like the activity in reading in general.
