The Thousand Names by Django Wexler

4.0

Ultimately the book went in a direction I was a little unhappy with, but it more had to do with my own tastes in plot/character development and overall tone in stories. The writing was great, really solid. There were a TON OF battles that tended to drag for me, but then again it's more my personal preferences. I wish it was more character and relationships focused, and I felt some of the side characters were a little sloppy or frustratingly vague. Will it all be explained in the next book? Probably. It was fun reading though, but didn't have the emotional impact I was hoping for.

I think I was hoping for the military-esque soldiers bonding, loyalty within ranks, deepening friendships, and brothers-in-arms type of deal. instead I get mutiny and betrayal and mysterious motives. And the next book I gather is all about court intrigue and deadly politics...which I don't HATE but I have to be in the mood for, and this wasn't what I expected. Not that it's bad, plot-wise. but yeah.
