Flame in the Mist by Renée Ahdieh

“I believe the stars align so souls can find one another. Whether they are meant to be souls in love or souls in life remains to be seen.”

There's a lot about this book that I liked and enjoyed, the world, the intricacies in which the characters interacted with one another, but most importantly, the way I just couldn't put this book down. But even with all of these great aspects, I couldn't help but feel like something was missing. I think that mostly has to do with the main character, Mariko. She was constantly doing stupid and annoying things that made it hard to like her, and it was constantly mentioned how clever she was, but we barely got to see any of that. I also didn't really care for the romance, which is usually my favorite part of any fantasy/romance novel. There just wasn't a lot of time spent on building their relationship romantically, they felt more like platonic pals honestly, and I think that could've been remedied if the author just waited until the sequel to have them be in a relationship, as they would've had time to fall in love. Overall this book was good, but not great.
