I was hopeful by the comparisons to Crimson Peak and Pan's Labyrinth for something haunting, fanciful, and thought provoking. While it had its moments leaning into those aesthetics and themes, our leads felt bland without any particularities that would make them standout and the story though intentionally slow paced, felt as if it dragged. The most poignant part of Arabelle's (audio book so sp?) journey did come from the ending. I won't say much other than it did offer some uniquely horrifying elements when you take into account she is a woman of color.
