Murder Most Royal by S.J. Bennett

4.0

A severed hand is discovered to have been washed up on a beach close to HM The Queen’s Sandringham estate, the mystery of who it belonged to is quickly solved by the Queen who identifies that it to belong to Edward St Cyr as she recognised the unique signet ring on one of the fingers.
There follows another mysterious death and then a hit and run accident which almost kills a local woman. Convinced that these events are inextricably linked, HM The Queen along with her Assistant Private Secretary Rozie, set out to solve the mystery.
This is the third book in the “Her Majesty The Queen Investigates” series but can be easily read as a standalone.
It is a quirky series and one that, at first glance, might seem risibly implausible what with having the Queen as sleuthing protagonist, but in fact it works really rather brilliantly!
It carries a certain charm and is delightfully fun to read. The author really breathes life into the characters, particularly the other members of the Royal Family whose conversations amongst each other are witty and funny. I could absolutely hear their real voices in my head as I read it! You almost get a sense that this is a genuine glimpse into the heart of family life for the Royals and I felt that it really highlighted the Queen’s true humility, humanity and dignity.
I absolutely loved that it was set in Sandringham as I live fairly close by to it in North Norfolk, and have visited it on many, many occasions (including Christmas Day). The author’s descriptions of the surrounding villages and scenery was very authentic although Abbotswood and Ladybridge Hall are fictional.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and I think, if you love a cosy crime book and the Royal Family, you will too! I’m sure that if Her Majesty had read the book she would have found it a delight too!
