I read this for a class on contemporary Indian fiction, and if it hadn't been required reading I don't know that I'd have gotten through it, but I'm very glad that I had. It's an absolute whirlwind of an epic, and I loved Rushdie's writing. Unfortunately the portrayal of the women in this story is what makes me give this book less than five stars.
