Homeless by Liyana Dhamirah

5.0

"Poverty hides in the shadows as the city's reputation grows for being "crazy rich" -- thanks to a certain book and Hollywood franchise, not to mention Singapore's gleaming skyscrapers."

'Homeless' is a memoir that recounts Liyana's journey through being homeless. This is an important read because it highlights homelessness that exists in Singapore. The pretty picture of lion city Singapore with beautiful landscapes is not reality. When you reach down to ground zero, that's when you will be able to see clearly all the others who could not enjoy privilege.

Liyana endured countless of obstacles, from sexual assault coupled with unexpected pregnancy, a once dedicated and loyal husband turned into a cheating and unreliable one and when her desperate pleas from the government resulted in no response. We read about her resilience and her success stories, all whilst recovering from her traumas. And now at the end of it all, she has found home in a community of friends made along the way and a proper shelter for her family.

For those who never had to worry about having food to eat or a safe place to sleep, it's time for you to wake up and acknowledge those who don't get to live the same way as you do. There are ways, even small ones, that you can do to help them. Educate yourself. And those who see yourself in the same shoes as Liyana, you aren't alone anymore. We see you, help will come.
