What an absolutely beautiful story so we’ll recounted. I absolutely loved how the author did such thorough research into the time period and states of livelihoods leading up to the Berlin Olympics. It made the story of Washington State’s Olympic rowing team and their inspiring accomplishments and work ethic so much more appreciated. I felt very emotional upon the ending of the book, hearing how the boys kept in contact with each other so regularly as they grew into men.
I am glad that the world events and propaganda efforts of the Nazis leading up to and during the 1936 Berlin Olympics were emphasized in this book as well because it’s so important to the story and history itself. The insanity of the fact that these men and many other US Olympic athletes (including Louis Zamperini who was mentioned in this book which excited me so much because he’s one of my heroes) performed in front of Hitler, saw him and his regime in person, and then years later risked their lives and fought to take him down gives me goosebumps.
After finishing this book I am dying to go back to Washington and visit the UW shell house to see the Husky clipper. I was lucky enough to do a ferry boat tour back in 2018 on the waters where these boys once rowed (the mention of them rowing during the tour is what made me put this book on my TBR and I’ve only just now gotten to it) and now I want to see it again knowing the miraculous story.
