Dawn by Octavia E. Butler

5.0

This probably one of the most fascinating books I’ve ever read. I’m probably too much of a science fiction fan to ever be on the humans side. Probably too much of a X-Man fan to see anything wrong with what the Oankali are doing. I haven’t read anything this fast in a really long time. Butler’s writing is so easy to read but is at the same time very thought provoking. This being earlier than her other works is very interesting, and has probably cemented her as one of my favorite authors. I was a little wary of how different her separate works were, but after starting this trilogy I trust her immensely.

This is very much a first book in a series. The ending is more a promise than a cliffhanger. Similar to how you might feel after the first volume in a graphic novel or the first season of a show that you know will continue. I couldn’t be happier that it is continuing, but the ending is not nearly as satisfying as the ending of Parable of the Sower, in my opinion. It feels similar but I would say that book gives a bit of a more complete arc than this one does. I couldn’t possibly give this any less than 5 stars though just off pure enjoyment. I think Butler achieves something immense with Dawn and it is accurately tilted, maybe to accurately considering my critique of the ending. If this was a standalone or if I didn’t know there was more in the series, or if I didn’t already have the other books, I would probably be more upset. Thankfully I do have the other books, though so the ending doesn’t bother me too much.

Overall I had one of the best reading experiences I’ve ever had reading this and I can’t wait to read more.
