The Penultimate Peril by Lemony Snicket

5.0

One final mission for the Baudelaires, and it is exciting to find even more twists and ambiguity and double crosses.

At this point, it seems a little unrealistic just how stupid the adult volunteers are. But maybe that is... the point? You can only ever be noble enough.

The other thing about this book is that is feels like an ending. As the Baudelaires become re-acquainted with so many characters from their past, from every previous novel, and say goodbye to them for what we are told is the final time, it seems like their story has ended. We know where the sugar bowl is, and it appears to be somewhere safe and permanent - even if we still do not know what exactly is inside it. The Baudelaires have realised that they can, and will, only ever be noble enough.

It seems like right at the end, all that remains is a short epilogue to round off the series. Instead, we have a whole volume that provides its own way of closing off the series.
