Lucinda's Secret
by Holly Black, Tony DiTerlizzi
This book had a soft adventure in the second half so it felt like a bridge for dangerous things to come. Similar to the first book, there is potentially harmful language and events relating to mental illness, so be wary if you decide to pick up this series.
Jared hasn’t had a calm day since he angered Thimbletack. The pranks keep coming not only at Jared but also towards the house and now Mallory wants to destroy the Field Guide. A panicky Jared doesn’t want to destroy it and would that really be an option since they already know the existence of these mythical creatures. A visit to Aunt Lucinda later, the siblings find an old map and off they go to find what may have been Arthur Spiderwick’s last known place before he disappeared.
The events in this installment were not adventurous but felt more like an expedition. The siblings meet more mythical creatures aside from the griffin their housing and they aren’t as nice. The bond between the siblings is getting stronger and the trust is growing. There are multiple events in this book where the strength in their relationship gets them through some difficult moments. This book also introduces quite a few new characters and mentions one that maybe shows up later.
That said, the art and writing in this book is unique and captivating. The writing makes the three characters relatable and the art really helps with picturing the new creatures they meet. There are not many descriptions on the creatures which is a bit of a drawback.
Overall, I enjoyed this installment and it felt like the calm before the storm. Mallory, Simon and Jared are getting more curious about the creatures and the riddle to why the Field Guide is so sought after was just revealed. However, what happens now is a mystery until the next book and I’m looking forward to another great installment!
