Books with so much potential that veer off a cliff 1/3 of the way through leave me so disappointed and frustrated. The first 100 pages or so were so engaging, with the friendship between René and Tommy so well executed and Tommy's feelings painfully clear yet hidden by necessity. Then... time travel! super virus! sci-fi future tech (in c.20 years??)! oh, also, AIDS! lockdowns! waaay too many point of view characters, and never enough time dedicated to getting to know any of them or giving us much reason to care about their stories. I was so gripped during the first third, until the lightning strike, but then afterwards it all fell apart, with too much shoved in to the point of crushing pressure, and just turning the page felt like a slog because I don't care about this next random character. Any one of these serious topics (AIDS, a COVID-19 equivalent virus) could have been taken as THE sole focus of the book, and it would have been all the better for that choice. As it stands, the focus is absolutely shattered, and it's hard to hold on to any single thread.
